The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM), Certified Records Manager (CRM) certification requires candidates to meet both educational and work experience certification requirements. A minimum of one year of professional records and information management (RIM) work experience is required, regardless of the level of education a candidate possesses. The minimum acceptable education is graduation from high school (completion of 12 grades) or equivalent (e.g., GED credential or equivalency diploma) in conjunction with five years of professional level RIM experience. The preferred qualifications are a college degree (four-year or bachelor’s degree) and one year of professional RIM experience. CRM candidates must pass a six-part written examination.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet one of the following eligibility option requirements:

Option 1:

Bachelor's degree (Graduate degree implies completion of Bachelor's degree) PLUS one year professional level RIM experience

Option 2:

3 years college PLUS two years professional level RIM experience

Option 3:

2 years college PLUS three years professional level RIM experience

Option 4:

1 year college PLUS four years professional level RIM experience

Option 5:

High School Diploma or GED PLUS five years professional level RIM experience

Note: Partial credit (in half-year increments) may be given for acceptable credit hours short of a bachelor’s degree.

Written exam can be taken only after credentials (the application form with supporting documentation) have been approved by the Certification Standards Committee.

The Certified Records Manager (CRM) credential has the following recertification information:

  • CRM certification is renewed every five years by paying an annual membership fee, earning and submitting 100 points for approved educational activity, and adhering to the ICRM Code of Ethics.

Coming Soon - Coast Guard policy regarding service member eligibility requirements to participate in the Voluntary Credentialing Program is under review with a projected release date of first quarter FY20.
