The International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) validates the skills of information technology professionals who apply computer investigation and analysis techniques to determine potential legal evidence. The crimes can include theft of trade secrets, theft of or destruction of intellectual property, and fraud. CHFIs demonstrate data recovery skills, which are needed to uncover data in a computer system, or recover encrypted, deleted or damaged file information. The certification target audience includes defense and military personnel, e-Business security professionals, systems administrators, legal professionals, banking, insurance, IT managers, government agencies, and law enforcement personnel. Candidates must meet a combination of training and experience requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Option 1:
Candidate must have completed the official CHFI instructor-led training (ILT), computer-based training (CBT), online live training, academic learning or have been certified in a previous version of the credential.
Option 2:
Candidate who does not attend official training must have at least two years of work experience in the Information Security domain and an educational background that reflects specialization in Information Security.
The Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) credential has the following other requirements:

Candidate who does not attend the Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator Course must submit an Exam Eligibility Form and obtain authorization from EC-Council before attempting the exam.

Candidate must be at least 18 years of age unless he or she provides the accredited training center/EC-Council a written consent of parent/legal guardian and a supporting letter from institution of higher learning. Only candidatse from nationally accredited institution of higher learning shall be considered.

To maintain certification, certificate holders must earn a total of 120 continuing education credits within 3 years of certification.
The credits can be earned in many ways including attending conferences, writing research papers, preparing for training classes in a related domain (for instructors), reading materials on related subject matters, taking an exam of a newer version of the certification, attending webinars, and many others.
