The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE), Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) certification's purpose is to certify individuals' ability to audit and analyze residential, commercial, and industrial buildings including determining project scope, collecting data, analyzing building performance, interpreting results, evaluating alternatives, submitting recommendations for energy conservation measures, and assisting with the implementation of these recommendations. Candidates must submit a completed application and meet one of the combinations of academic and work experience requirements to be eligible to sit for the exam.

Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have completed five commercial (non-residential) audits, with a minimum of two building use types, completed within three years of applying for the exam. Verification of completion of audit will need to be included on the application for certification.
Candidate must have completed two hours of safety courses. Safety courses taken to maintain licensing requirements, certification requirements in a related field, employer sponsored/required, or to meet state requirements will be accepted.
Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must be a licensed engineer or architect with a minimum of two years' experience in energy auditing.
Pathway 2:Candidate must have a degree in engineering or have a five or six year architecture degree with a minimum of three years' experience in energy auditing.
Pathway 3:Candidate must have four years of science, technology, math, or architecture degree with a minimum of four years' experience in energy auditing.
Pathway 4:Candidate must have a two year technical degree or vocational training certificate in mechanical/electrical engineering technology with a minimum of four years' experience in energy auditing. Military qualify under this option.
Pathway 5:Candidate must have a four year non-STEM degree and a minimum of five years' experience in energy auditing.
Pathway 6:Candidate must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of seven years' experience in energy auditing.
