The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Fiber Optic Installers (FOI) certification is an intermediate-level credential for fiber optic technicians. The FOI exam focuses on a general understanding of optical fiber installation, connectorization, splicing, and testing; candidates for the FOI certification are expected to be familiar with optical fibers, connectors, and splice performance characteristics. Candidates must be proficient in the installation of connectors on various types of fiber optic cables using epoxies; additionally, FOI technicians perform mechanical and fusion splicing. Candidates must pass a written exam.

RECERTIFICATION

Fiber Optics Installer (FOI)

Renewal Period: 4 years

The Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) credential has the following recertification information:

  • There are two ways to renew the FOI certification:
    1. Candidates that have been working in the industry that pertains to the certification will need to have their supervisor complete the Employer Verification Form and show proof of having received 24 hours of continuing education or retest to renew the certification.
    2. Candidates that have not been working in the industry that pertains to the certification will be required to attend an ETA approved hands-on refresher course and show proof of 24 hours of continuing education or retest to renew the certification.

Additional considerations for the Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) include:

  • ETA-I Fiber Optic Installer Certification (FOI) is a pre-requisite for ETA-I Fiber Optic Technician (FOT) certification.
