Certified Safety Specialist (WSO-CSS) is an entry-level certification for safety practitioners who specialize in a specific area in the safety profession. Certificaiton is focused on the areas of fire safety, transportation safety, nuclear safety, hazardous materials, product safety, health care safety, electrical safety, oil well drilling and well servicing, mining & tunneling safety,and ladder safety. Candidate must be able to perform both the technical and management work of safety in their respective field in order to secure the most effective results through and with other people. Candidate must also be able to perform all of the technical and management work required of the safety position. Candidate must pass a written exam.

Certified Safety Specialist (WSO-CSS)

Certification Requirements Applicable Experience

Candidate must have at least ten years of professional safety experience, and or a combination of education and experience to equal 10 years (see below for education equivalents). Candidate's degree can be substituted, as follows, for professional safety work experience at the discretion of the WSO Board.

Experience Equivalents include:

  • Bachelor's degree = 4 years
  • Master's degree = 2 years
  • Doctorate degree = 3 years
  • Relevant professional licensing, certification or registration = up to 2 years

Note: The above experience equivalents shall be acceptable at the highest level and shall not be cumulative.

Individual experience will be assessed by the credentialing agency.
Navy training and experience counts towards this requirement.
Certification Requirements

Candidates must be a current Affiliate Member of the WSO, be of good moral character, and meet the application requirements.

  • Two "Candidate Evaluations" from individuals familiar with the applicant’s safety experience must be submitted to the WSO Board.
  • Candidate must agree to adhere to the World Safety Organization Code of Ethics.
  • Some of the areas of specialization for WSO-CSS exam are Industrial Hygiene, Nuclear Safety, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials Management, and Construction Safety.
  • Candidate must agree to complete at least one WSO approved safety course or training program (or approved equivalent) per year for a period of five years and then take the examination for the professional certification no later than one year after the completion of the last training course/program.
  • Candidate will be asked to respond to an essay question using no more than 100 words, "What have you accomplished in the past twelve months which you consider an important contribution to safety disciplines or your professional expertise?"

Note: Formal training is just one method of gaining the knowledge required to pass a credential exam. Other factors that might impact your success in passing the exam can include prior service education, training, and experience; military voluntary education (e.g., coursework, degrees); and on-the-job training and experience.

Note: Candidates will be required to take a Specialty portion of the exam that covers their area of Professional Expertise. Some of the areas of specialization are Industrial Hygiene, Nuclear Safety, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials Management, Construction Safety, etc.
