The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), while not formally a license or certification in and of itself, is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act for workers who need access to secure areas of the nation's maritime facilities and vessels. TSA conducts a security threat assessment (background check) to determine a person's eligibility and issues the credential. U.S. citizens and immigrants in certain immigration categories may apply for the credential.

Eligibility REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for the TWIC must:
- Complete an application
- Schedule an appointment
- Visit a TWIC application center to:
- Provide required documentation, be fingerprinted and take a facial photo.
- Pay required fee(s).
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, naturalized citizens or nonimmigrant aliens, asylees, or refugees in lawful status.

- Note: Enlisted Active Duty and Reserve U.S. Navy personnel in eligible ratings may have the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) application fee funded through the Navy COOL program.
