The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), NACE International Protective Coating Specialist is for individuals who are experienced, knowledgeable, and capable of performing work at an advanced level in both the theory and practice of corrosion prevention and control in the protective coatings field. The NACE International Protective Coating Specialist covers areas including but not limited to creating paint maintenance programs, conducting site surveys, reviewing bidders' lists, and understanding of appropriate safety, environment, and health issues. Candidates must meet minimum experience and/or education requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Candidate must have 12 years of verifiable work experience in protective coatings.
Option 2:
Candidate must have eight years of verifiable work experience in protective coatings and one of the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Sciences or Engineering
- Protective Coating Technician Certification
- CIP Peer Certification
- Frosio Coating Inspector Level III
- SSPC Protective Coating Specialist
