The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/Career and Technical Education certification validates the knowledge and skills of teachers whose students range in age from 11 to 18 and above. Career and Technical Education teachers must demonstrate industry-specific subject matter expertise. Candidates must meet a combination of experience and education requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam and submit three portfolio assessments that demonstrate accomplished teaching practice.

Candidate must possess a valid state teaching or counseling license.

Candidate registering for the Career and Technical Education certificate required to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution only if state requires one for current license.

Candidate must have a minimum of three years experience teaching in one or more early childhood, elementary, middle, or high school.

    • In this exercise, candidate asked to describe and justify a contextualized learning experience that will integrate specified skills from another discipline with career and technical skills.
  • Constructed Response: Employability Skills
    • In this exercise, candidate demonstrates knowledge of workplace skills and expectations, and the use of authentic work simulations to advance student understanding of these skills and expectations. Based on a given scenario, candidate asked to describe and justify a work simulation that would advance student understanding of the specified skills.
  • Constructed Response: Work-based Learning
    • In this exercise, candidate demonstrates knowledge of age-appropriate work-based learning strategies and programs. Candidate asked to describe and justify the appropriateness of a specified type of work-based learning experience, including the responsibilities of the specified participants.

Performance Exam Requirements

In addition to the computer-based assessment, candidate for National Board Certification required to complete three portfolio entries, which are submitted online.

The topics for the portfolio entries are as follows:

  • Differentiation Instruction
    • This classroom-based portfolio entry is primarily comprised of samples of student work and an accompanying written commentary. 
  • Teaching Practice and Learning Environment
    • This is a classroom-based portfolio entry that requires video recordings of interactions between the candidate and students.
  • Effective and Reflective Practitioner
    • This portfolio entry requires examples of assessments used for formative and summative purposes. 

Testing Information

  • Exam Administration

    Credential exams may be administered in-person at a testing site, proctored on-line remotely, or have options for both. If an exam is administered through a test vendor, the third-party test vendor box will be checked. RECERTIFICATION

Early Adolescence Through Young Adulthood/Career and Technical Education

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Early Adolescence Through Young Adulthood/Career and Technical Education credential has the following recertification information:

  • Certification holders must compile and submit a Profile of Professional Growth (PPG), demonstrating how their practices continue to align with the Five Core Propositions in the chosen certificate area. In contrast to initial certification, the PPG is a single submission composed of three interrelated components and a reflection.
  • Beginning in 2021, certification holders will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and skills every five years. This policy will take effect for those who certify in 2017 and later.

  • Note: Marine Corps COOL will only pay recertification fees for the current year, no arrears will be paid. Voucher requests for recertification fees must be submitted with proof of the current status of the certification (for example, a screen shot of your credentialing agency dashboard or a copy of a current fee receipt).
