The American Petroleum Institute (API), TES Tank Entry Supervisor (API TES) certification is geared to candidates with minimum knowledge, experience, and skills needed to safely perform duties required by tank entry supervisors. API TES candidates must have knowledge of above ground petroleum storage tanks and their construction. Candidates must also have knowledge of how to plan, prepare for and address potential hazards during the tank entry, ventilation and entire job process of tank cleaning and maintenance. Scope of knowledge for the API TES certification consists of tank decommissioning isolation; ventilation; atmospheric testing and analysis; work permitting; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Confined Space regulatory requirements; emergency response; and tank recommissioning. Candidates must meet the minimum education and/or experience eligibility requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have:
- A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree or higher in engineering or technology; and
- One year of experience in supervising confined space (AST) related activities including: permit issuance, tank entry, atmospheric testing, tank cleaning, tank repair and maintenance as described in API 2015.
Candidate must have:
- A two-year degree or certificate in engineering or technology; and
- Two years of experience in confined space (AST) related activities including: permit issuance, tank entry, atmospheric testing, tank cleaning, tank repair and maintenance as described in API 2015, of which one year must be in Supervisor's capacity.
Candidate must have:
- A High School Diploma or equivalent; and
- Four years of experience in confined space (AST) related activities including: permit issuance, tank entry, atmospheric testing, tank cleaning, tank repair and maintenance as described in API 2015, of which one year must be in Supervisor's capacity.
Candidate must have:
- A minimum of five years experience in confined space (AST) related activities including: permit issuance, tank entry, atmospheric testing, tank cleaning, tank repair and maintenance as described in API 2015, of which one year must be in Supervisor's capacity.

- Candidate must have acquired work experience within the last ten years while employed by, or under contract with, an authorized inspection agency or owner/user agency.
