MOS 5974 Tactical Data Systems Technician

MOS Description

Tactical Data Systems Technicians plan and perform operational management and maintenance on the Marine Air Command and Control Systems (MACCS) Tactical Data Systems, and common hardware/software suites. They are responsible for the installation, configuring, management, system administration, and maintenance of all MACCS Tactical Data Systems, hardware and software. They make periodic inspections and perform preventive maintenance. They use proper safety procedures in system maintenance and operations; diagnose and isolate malfunction to the fault; remove and replace LRU (line repairable unit), if hardware, perform corrective measures of software; and verify that the malfunction has been corrected. They maintain diagnostic and operational tools, support, and test equipment; assist in maintaining accountability of all equipment; assist in maintaining accountability of all parts of the system including software, spare parts, and in requisitioning supplies and spare parts. They maintain necessary records of maintenance and compile data for necessary records of maintenance and compile data for reports. The Tactical Data System Administrator Managers Course is available for skill enhancement training.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Computer Service Technician (CST) is an entry-level credential for professionals who supply computer support. The CST exam assesses candidates’ skills in performing hardware servicing and system software skills for personal computers (PCs). CST candidates should have knowledge of PC components, operating systems, basic networking, troubleshooting, and safety procedures. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The CompTIA A+ ce certification demonstrates competency as a computer support technician. The A+ ce certification is appropriate for entry-level technicians who perform tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. Security, safety and environmental issues, and communication and professionalism are also covered. It is recommended, although not required, that candidates have nine to twelve months of related hands-on experience as an IT professional.

The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), Certified Electronics Technician - Associate-Level is an entry-level certification. This certification validates the candidate's basic electronic knowledge for entry-level electronic professions. The exam covers basic electronics, math, DC and AC circuits, transistors and troubleshooting. The Associate CET is also a pre-requisite for ISCET Journeyman level certifications. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Certified Electronics Technician - Journeyman-Level - Computer Electronics. This is an entry-level certification exam. Technicians working in this field will have knowledge in the following areas; operation of computer systems with the greatest emphasis on the hardware, basic arithmetic and logic operations as related to computer theory, computer organization, input and output equipment, and memory and storage. The technician should have some knowledge of software and programming, and be able to explain troubleshooting procedures. Applicants must pass a written exam.

Network+ ce is an intermediate skill level certification for IT technicians who can describe the features and functions of networking components and manage, maintain, troubleshoot, install, operate and configure basic network infrastructure. In addition, certification holders have a basic understanding of enterprise technologies, including cloud and virtualization technologies. Network+ ce is appropriate for computer network technicians, engineers, analysts and administrators. Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Network+ ce candidates have at least nine months of experience in network support or administration or academic training, along with a CompTIA A+ ce certification.

The CompTIA Security+ ce certification designates knowledgeable professionals in the field of IT security. Security+ ce is an introductory level certification that proves competency in system security, network infrastructure, access control, assessments and audits, cryptography and organizational security. Occupations relevant to this certification include computer security specialists, computer and information systems managers, and network and computer systems administrators. Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Security+ ce candidates have at least two years of technical networking experience, with an emphasis on security. The CompTIA Network+ ce certification is also recommended.

The International Computer Driving License (ICDL) is a basic skill level certification program that validates an individual's basic computer skills training. The ICDL is composed of modules covering computer topics. The modules are vendor neutral, i.e., not linked to a particular software firm. Candidates may select any combination of modules to create a custom program. There are no education or experience requirements and training is not mandatory.

The IC3 Digital Literacy Certification (IC3) is an entry level certification for candidates to demonstrate general computing and internet skills. The exam covers a variety of commonly used software products and Internet protocols and is ideal for beginners. The certification is relevant to any occupation requiring a general knowledge of how computers function and an ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and internet applications. There are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the IC3 exams. The IC3 Global Standard 4 (GS4) exams apply to Windows 7 and Office 2010, while the IC3 Global Standard 5 (GS5) exams apply to Windows 10 and Office 2016. Candidates must pass the three exams for either GS4 or GS5 to be certified.

Cisco Systems, Inc., Cisco Certified Network Associate Security (CCNA Security) validates associate-level knowledge and skills required to secure Cisco networks, including the skills required to develop a security infrastructure, recognize threats and vulnerabilities to networks, and mitigate security threats. The Cisco CCNA Security curriculum emphasizes core security technologies, the installation, troubleshooting and monitoring of network devices to maintain integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and devices, and competency in the technologies that Cisco uses in its security structure. CCNA Security is targeted towards job roles such as Network Security Specialist, Security Administrator, or Network Security Support Engineer. There are no formal education or experience requirements, however candidates must hold a valid CCENT, CCNA Routing and Switching, or any CCIE certification to be eligible for the CCNA Security certification.

The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification is an entry-level certification designed to help individuals take the first step toward a career as an IT professional or developer. Students, those changing careers or just starting, or those exploring a technology career are best suited towards earning an MTA certification. The next step in the Microsoft certification path is Microsoft Technology Specialist (MCTS), which requires hands-on experience with the Microsoft technology platform. There are a number of MTA exams available in the area of IT infrastructure, database or developer. Passing one exam earns the MTA certification.

Note that individuals who already have an in-depth understanding of and hands-on experience with Microsoft technologies, might want to start with a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification or one of the Professional Series tracks. Please review the VA website to check which Microsoft exams in this certification track are eligible for GI Bill reimbursement.
