MOS 5711 Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Defense Specialist

MOS Description

CBRN Defense Specialists primary responsibility is to ensure their unit is trained and ready to survive and operate in a CBRN environment. CBRN Defense Specialist assists, conduct, and supervise training in CBRN defense monitor, survey and reconnaissance, chemical detection and identification, biological agent collection and sampling, decontamination of personnel, equipment and casualties, and in individual protective measures and first aid for unit personnel. CBRN Defense Specialist also operate within the unit's combat operations center assisting CBRN Defense Officers in providing commanders in recommended courses of action to meet operational objectives and facilitate mission accomplishment as they relate to CBRN defense. CBRN Defense Specialists provide tactical information to the commander relative to CBRN exposure status, location of contaminated areas on the battlefield, and readiness status of their unit's CBRN defense equipment. Additionally, CBRN Defense Specialists are responsible for the employment, maintenance, and serviceability, of CBRN defense equipment and supplies. They supervise and coordinate the preparation of personnel, equipment for movement/placement (CBRN Surveillance and Reconnaissance), and the establishment and operation of CBRN centers. This MOS will be assigned and voided only by the authority of the CMC (MM).

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is an intermediate-level credential for professionals who support workplace safety practices. CSPs conduct worksite assessments, determine risk, measure hazards and controls, evaluate risk and hazard control measures, investigate incidents, maintain incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. CSP candidates must meet experiential requirements that relate to the field of workplace safety. Candidates must pass a written exam.

National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists, Registered Radiation Protection Technologist (RRPT) validates competency in fundamental and operational topics related to radiation protection. A Radiation Protection Technologist is a person engaged in providing radiation protection to the radiation worker, the general public, and the environment from the effects of ionizing radiation. They have basic understanding of the natural laws of ionizing radiation, the mechanism of radiation damage, methods of detection, and hazards assessment. They provide supervisory, administrative, and/or physical control, utilizing sound health physics principles in compliance with local and statutory requirements and accepted industry practices. This is a mid-level certification and requires applicants to hold a high school diploma or equivalent. In addition, the applicant must submit to the Board evidence of operational abilities as a Radiation Protection Technologists and have a minimum of five years of experience. Experience credit allowed for formal education, company training programs and applicable military training is cumulative up to a maximum of two years. Applicants must also pass a national examination.

Renewal Period: 2 years

The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Wastewater Treatment Operator - Class IV is an advanced career-level biological wastewater treatment operator certification offered by ABC. Candidates for Class IV must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus 1,800 contact hours of post-high school education, and 4 years of acceptable experience including 2 years of direct responsible charge experience. Individuals who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible through ABC's system that allows for substitution of education and experience. Candidates must also pass an examination, which evaluates an operator's knowledge of tasks related to the operation of wastewater treatment plants. The specifications for the different levels of exams are based on a weighting of the job analysis results so that they reflect the criticality of tasks performed on the job.

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel – X-Ray and RAM (IRSSP-Combo) certification is for individuals who perform or supervise industrial radiography utilizing radiation-producing equipment. Candidates must meet the ASNT IRRSP training and experience requirements. Candidates must pass the written and practical exams.

The United States Department of Transportation (FMCSA), Hazardous Material Endorsement (H) is a credential that may be obtained by individuals who are commercial driver's license (CDL) holders. The Hazardous Material Endorsement (H) permits the professional truck driver to transport hazardous materials (HAZMAT); the endorsement is required to legally transport hazardous material. To earn the Hazardous Material Endorsement (H), candidates are required to be CDL holders, be a U.S. citizen or able to provide proof of legal status in the United States, be of legal age to operate a HAZMAT vehicle, willing to complete the TSA background check and to pass this check plus additional background checks. Candidates must complete a medical screening and pass the written exam.
