MOS 4421 Legal Services Specialist

MOS Description

The Legal Services Specialist MOS encompasses every facet of legal administration. General duties involve the legal operational, managerial, clerical and administrative duties incident to an LSSS, LSST, or OSJA. Typical duties include research, preparation and typing of general correspondence, forms, reports, wills, powers of attorney, and other documents dealing with legal and quasi-legal matters; checking all completed work for typographic accuracy; maintaining office correspondence files, directives and publications; if senior in grade, will act as the Legal Services Chief and Senior Enlisted Advisor directly responsible to the OIC/ SJA for the overall assignment, performance, training, counseling, morale, discipline and welfare of all enlisted personnel. The Legal Services Chief is the active liaison between the command dealing with enlisted policy and duty assignments and advisor to the judge advocates with regard to enlisted instruction and supervision. Selected Marines may attend follow-on training at the Legal Services Court Reporter Course.

The National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), PACE Registered Paralegal (RP) is for experienced paralegals who possess knowledge, skills, and ability in administration of client legal matters, development of client legal matters, factual legal research and writing, and office administration. RP applicants must meet education and/or work experience requirements and pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 5 years

Accredited Legal Secretary (ALS) is the basic certification for legal professionals. Candidates must have completed one of the following requirements to take the written examination; an accredited business/legal course, NALS Legal Training Course, or have one year of general office experience. Candidate needs to take and pass a four-hour, three-part exam that includes knowledge areas on written communications, office procedures and legal knowledge, and ethics, human relations, and judgment.

Certified Legal Assistant (CLA)/Certified Paralegal (CP) is an entry-level certification. CLA/CP credential signifies that a legal assistant is capable of providing superior services to firms and corporations. National surveys consistently show Certified Legal Assistants/Certified Paralegals are better utilized in a field where attorneys are looking for a credible, dependable way to measure ability. The credential has been recognized by the American Bar Association as a designation which marks a high level of professional achievement. The CLA/CP credential has also been recognized by over 47 legal assistant organizations and numerous bar associations. Candidates must meet education and/or experience requirements and pass an examination.

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS): Microsoft Office 2013 credential is an entry-level certification for individuals who wish to demonstrate expertise in using Microsoft Office programs. Key technologies include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, SharePoint and OneNote. Candidates must pass one certification exam. There are no experience requirements for this certification but Microsoft Learning recommends that a candidate have hands-on experience with the product prior to testing.
