MOS Description

MOS 3112 encompasses broad transportation responsibilities. Distribution Management Specialists use numerous Federal, DoD and service regulations, the Defense Transportation System (DTS), commercial modes of transportation, and distribution logistic functions to enable optimal selection and procurement of commercial and government-operated land, air, and water transportation services. They use a variety of automated systems in the performance of their duties. Warehousing, marine, rail, motor and air terminal operations, materials handling, packing, packaging, preservation, and hazardous materials handling functions are performed daily. Distribution Management Specialists perform technical distribution management duties pertaining to movement of civilian and military personnel and their dependents, both individually and in groups, using any or all modes of transportation. This includes planning for troop movements via scheduled service special train or charter air and bus, as well as port calls for overseas travel. The specialists perform personal property counseling interviews and advise members and dependents of their personal property shipping entitlements. The specialist performs additional duties and tasks at military air terminals for air freight, passenger services, and air terminal operation centers. The specialists perform passport and visa services by counseling members and dependents about documentary requirements, foreign regulations, and by aiding in the preparation and submission of required paperwork for transmission to the Department of State and foreign embassies. This includes preparation for all freight shipment documents for manifesting of air cargo and passengers aboard Government or commercial charter aircraft. MOS 3112 Marines within the MLGs must be trained to perform in-theater sustainment receiving, shipping, in-transit visibility, and distribution functions. Base/Station 3112 Marines perform deployment support functions relating to origin to POE via commercial modes. While importing/exporting cargo OCONUS the specialists will perform foreign customs clearance and tariff exemption in accordance with host nation policies. 3112 Marines perform additional functions both within the MAGTF and at bases and stations such as, blocking and bracing of dry cargo containers, rail and truck shipments, and certifying hazardous materials shipments for transportation by air, land and sea.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is an intermediate-level credential for professionals who support workplace safety practices. Candidates are required to have professional experience that includes safety responsibilities. CSPs conduct worksite assessments, determine risk, measure hazards and controls, evaluate risk and hazard control measures, investigate incidents, maintain incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. Candidates are required to hold a bachelor's degree in any field. CSP candidates must meet experiential requirements that relate to the field of workplace safety. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) is a certification for experienced professionals with the experience and knowledge to direct and administer a private fleet, traffic, or transportation operation. The CTP designation confirms that holders have the knowledge and ability to understand complex operational and regulatory issues, identify and evaluate potential costs and savings, and develop systems and practices that best meet their company's transportation objectives and needs. The knowledge and skills required to successfully complete the CTP examination include areas of finance, operations, safety, human resources, and vehicle and equipment maintenance. To be eligible for the CTP, candidates must achieve at least 600 certification points earned through fleet management/supplier experience, formal education, active participation in the fleet/transportation community, and your continued pursuit of education. At least 500 points must be earned through fleet management/supplier experience where each year of experience is worth 100 points. Candidates must also pass an examination.

The Project Management Institute (PMI), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is an entry-level certification for project practitioners. Designed for those with less project experience, the CAPM demonstrates an understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology and processes of effective project management. The written exam covers project management areas such as initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, closing, and professional and social responsibility. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1500 hours professional experience on a project team or 23 hours of project management education.

The American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS), Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) is for individuals who possess the knowledge to understand and manage the integration and coordination of end-to-end supply chain activities. The CSCP takes a broad view of operations, extending beyond internal operations to encompass the entire supply chain, from supplier, through the company, to the end consumer. CSCP candidates must meet an experience, degree or credential eligibility requirement and pass a written exam.

Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) cerification is for candidates who have proficiency in front-line hazardous materials. Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant experience with responsibilities directly related to the handling of hazardous materials and/or waste in the workplace; or, an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree from an accredited college or university in hazardous materials management, environmental science, environmental management, or environmental technology, plus 3 years of relevant experience as described above. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Certified Logistics Technician (CLTAE) recognizes individuals who demonstrate mastery of the core competencies of material handling at the front-line (entry-level through front-line supervisor). The goal of the CLTAE is to raise the level of performance of logistics workers both to assist the individuals in finding higher-wage jobs. The CLTAE consists of two parts: the foundational-level Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) certificate and the mid-level technical CLT certification. Before taking the CLTAE assessment, candidates must have a CLA certificate. MSSC strongly recommends that individuals be at an 8th-grade math and 10th-grade reading level.

The Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC), Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) is a foundational-level credential and is a prerequisite for the Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) certification. MSSC training and assessment addresses the need for employability and academic skills as well as technical skills. MSSC strongly recommends that individuals be at the 8th grade level of math and 9th grade level of English before attempting MSSC courses and assessments. There are no experiential or hands-on requirements for MSSC certification as it is expected that individual employers will determine those requirements based upon their own specific needs. MSSC does not require that individuals take MSSC courses prior to testing. Critical work functions and their related key activities for the CLA include: global supply chain logistics life cycle, logistics environment, material handling equipment, safety principles, safe material handling and equipment operation, quality control principles, workplace communications, teamwork and workplace behavior to solve problems, and using computers.

The CSCMP SCPro Level One- Cornerstones of Supply Chain Management is an entry-level credential for supply chain professionals.
