MOS 1171 Water Support Technician

MOS Description

Water Support Technicians install, operate, inspect, and perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, water purification equipment, water storage/distribution systems, and laundry and shower facilities. They conduct and evaluate water surveys, water reconnaissance, and water quality analysis as well as establish, maintain, and close sanitation systems. When on Humanitarian Assistance and Civil Military Operations these technicians also plan, install, and repair the plumbing systems of structures. These duties include cutting, bending, and threading pipes; joining pipes using screws, bolts, fittings, solder, and plastic solvent; cleaning tanks; testing water to determine acidity, impurities, turbidity, and conductivity; and regulating the flow of raw water for treatment while mixing it with specified amounts of chemicals in the purification process. Corporal through Staff Sergeant are afforded the opportunity to attend a skill progression course the Advanced Water Support Technician course (M03UAC2) that provides in-depth instruction on the requirements of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and the planning of water support. An apprenticeship program, leading to U.S. Department of Labor certification as a Journey Worker, is available to Water Support Technicians under the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP).

CSP candidates must meet experiential requirements that relate to the field of workplace safety. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 2 years

The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE), Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) certification is for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. The CPD is the only international credential program in the plumbing engineering field and sets the standards for leadership within the industry. Candidates must possess a minimum of four years of practical experience in a position of responsibility for the design of plumbing systems and possess a baccalaureate degree in a field related to engineering. In lieu of an accredited degree, candidates may substitute up to an additional four years of practical experience in the design of plumbing systems, for a total of eight years, or be granted a credit of one-half year of practical experience for each full year of education in an accredited curriculum related to plumbing engineering. Candidates must take a written exam.

Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Water Treatment Operator - Class I is the entry-level water treatment operator certification. Candidates for Class I must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and one year of relevant work experience. Individuals who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible through ABC's system that allows for substitution of education and experience. Candidates must also pass an examination, which evaluates an operator's knowledge of tasks related to water treatment practices. To pass an ABC exam, an operator must demonstrate knowledge of the core competencies. The specifications for the different levels of exams are based on a weighting of the job analysis results so that they reflect the criticality of tasks performed on the job. ABC certifications are renewed every two years; often certified individuals seek advanced levels of credentialing as additional experience is gained. See the agency's website for more information.

Candidates must also pass an examination demonstrating knowledge of the core competencies related to water distribution practices. The specifications for the different levels (classes) of exams are based on a weighting of the job analysis results so that they reflect the criticality of tasks performed on the job. The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Wastewater Treatment Analyst - Class I is an entry-level wastewater analyst certification. Candidates for Class I must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Individuals who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible based on experience and other criteria. Candidates must also pass an examination, demonstrating knowledge of core competencies related to the analysis of wastewater.

The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Wastewater Treatment Operator - Class IV is an advanced career-level biological wastewater treatment operator certification offered by ABC. Candidates for Class IV must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus 1,800 contact hours of post-high school education, and 4 years of acceptable experience including 2 years of direct responsible charge experience. Individuals who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible through ABC's system that allows for substitution of education and experience. Candidates must also pass an examination, which evaluates an operator's knowledge of tasks related to the operation of wastewater treatment plants. The specifications for the different levels of exams are based on a weighting of the job analysis results so that they reflect the criticality of tasks performed on the job.

The National Ground Water Association (NGWA), Certified Pump Installer (CPI) is an intermediate-level credential for groundwater technicians. CPIs are often contractors who coordinate not just the ground water pump installation at a site, but related efforts. CPIs are expected to meet experience requirements and to have knowledge of specialized equipment use, geologic formations, and pump troubleshooting skills. Candidates must take a written exam.

Renewal Period: 2 years

The Very Small Water System Operator must have knowledge how to operate equipment and system, water quality parameters and sampling, how to install, maintain and evaluate equipment, perform safety duties and administrative and compliance duties. Candidates must have a high school diploma, and six months of operator experience. Candidates must also pass an examination, which is multiple choice and evaluates an operator's knowledge of tasks related to the operation of small water systems.

The National Ground Water Association (NGWA), Certified Well Driller (CWD) is an intermediate-level credential for groundwater technicians. CWDs drill groundwater wells; often CWDs are contractors who coordinate not just the drilling of a site, but related efforts. CWDs are expected to meet experience requirements and to have knowledge of specialized equipment use, geologic formations, and drilling troubleshooting skills. Candidates must take a written exam.

The Association of Water Technologies, Certified Water Technologist (CWT) credential is an intermediate-level designation for professional boiler and chiller workers. CWTs are required to have 5 years of related experience, are committed to excellence in water quality and water treatment and are required to pass an exam.

The International Code Council (ICC), Plumbing Plans Examiner - P3 certification is for candidates who review drawings, specifications, and other documentation submitted by the design professional to demonstrate compliance with jurisdictional codes and standards. The Plumbing Plans Examiner has a strong understanding of fixtures, water heater installation and safety, water supply and distribution, drainage, vents, interceptors, separators, and storage systems as it applies to plumbing code standards. There are no prerequisite educational or experience requirements, but candidates must have technical knowledge and pass a written exam.

The International Code Council (ICC), Commercial Plumbing Inspector - P2 certification validates an inspector's basic technical education and related experience. The Commercial Plumbing Inspector has the skills to assess whether plumbing systems are safe and legal, has a strong knowledge of building and plumbing codes and understands the workings of: fixtures, water heaters, water supply and distribution, sanitary and storm drainage, vents, interceptors, separators, and special piping as they apply to code compliance when conducting inspections. There are no prerequisite educational or experience requirements, but candidates must have technical knowledge and pass a written exam.

A STAR Steamfitting-Pipefitting Mastry certification candidate is a qualified individual who can demonstrate mastery of the trade and will be skilled and experienced in fabricating, preparing, rigging and installing pipes, tubing and equipment by following plans, specifications, SOP's and standard pipefitting practices in order to comply with local and jurisdictional codes and help to complete the job/project safely, on schedule and to the satisfaction of the customer. Candidates should have completed a UA training program or equivalent and/or have five years of experience in the industry. Candidates must pass a written examination.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Associate Safety Professional certification (ASP) validates an individual's knowledge and experience in the safety profession. ASP certifies an individual's ability to perform at least 50% of professional-level safety duties in safety, health, environment and ergonomics. Safety professionals are required to make worksite assessments to determine risks, potential hazards and controls, evaluate risks and hazard control measures for equipment, systems, facilities and processes, investigate incidents, maintain and evaluate incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. ASP candidates are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in any field or an associate's in safety, health, or the environment, or a closely related field. In addition, candidates must have one year of professional safety experience where safety is at least 50%, preventative, professional level with breadth and depth of safety duties. Candidates must take a written exam.
