MOS Description

Data Systems Administrators support a myriad of computer and Network Operating Systems (NOS) to include versions of Linux, Microsoft, and Unix, to enable command and control. Typical duties include active directory administration, Domain Name Service (DNS) Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Warfighting Systems, Database administration and Unified Communications. Marines will be familiar with command line interface and tools (CLI), performance monitoring, client/server configuration, voice and video services, storage administration, virtualization, collaborative tools, and troubleshooting of hardware/software.

Project+ covers the entire project life cycle from initiation and planning through execution, acceptance, support and closure. Project+ is appropriate for any managerial position across occupations. Although there are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the exam, one year of managing, directing or participating in small- to medium-scale projects is recommended.

The OCP is the next step up in a database administrator's path that requires the passing of one or more exams as well as having to attend an instructor led course (or an online one). The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Broadband-Voice over Internet Protocol (B-VoIP) certification is an intermediate-level credential for B-VoIP technicians who install, maintain, repair and replace voice, data and video over Internet Protocol equipment. B-VoIP technicians connect B-VoIP equipment to local and wide area computer network systems, perform cable installation, replacement, modernization, and support interconnection between different cable types and wireless equipment; they also configure and provision B-VoIP equipment and transmission media. B-VoIP technicians have knowledge of protocols used for the telecommunications industry and are familiar with telecom industry acronyms and language. Though ETA-I does not require any specific training, education or experience for candidates of the B-VoIP certification, candidates are strongly encouraged to have the requisite knowledge and experience necessary to challenge the exam.

The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification is an entry-level certification designed to help individuals take the first step toward a career as an IT professional or developer. Students, those changing careers or just starting, or those exploring a technology career are best suited towards earning an MTA certification. The next step in the Microsoft certification path is Microsoft Technology Specialist (MCTS), which requires hands-on experience with the Microsoft technology platform. There are a number of MTA exams available in the area of IT infrastructure, database or developer. Passing one exam earns the MTA certification.

Note that individuals who already have an in-depth understanding of and hands-on experience with Microsoft technologies, might want to start with a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification or one of the Professional Series tracks.
